PMDL was appointed lead design consultant in 2023 to deliver a sensitive extension to the Moorabbin Justice Centre, introducing family and child-focused waiting and meeting spaces alongside upgraded staff facilities. The design carefully responds to the existing court fabric, integrating seamlessly while prioritising calm, clarity, and continuity through considered spatial planning, sightlines, and a restrained material and colour palette.

Delivered within a live court environment under complex planning and operational constraints, the project required precise coordination to maintain ongoing court functions.

Works included the reorganisation of back-of-house areas to create specialised support rooms, new offices and meeting spaces, and an upgraded courtyard that enhances connectivity and amenity for staff and visitors alike.

Materiality and detailing were central to the approach, ensuring the extension reads as a contemporary yet discreet addition. The design reinforces the building’s street presence while providing dignified, human-centred environments that balance operational efficiency with the sensitive requirements of families, children, and staff. The result is a carefully considered architectural intervention that strengthens both the functionality and the character of the Moorabbin Justice Centre.
