Responsibility

Responsibility

At PMDL, social impact means designing responsibly for people, places, and the future we all share.

Our Shared Perspective ethos guides our approach to sustainability.

Shared perspective at PMDL

Sustainability

By prioritising connections to Country and communities and applying simple sustainability principles (orientation, shading, lighting, cross-ventilation, adaptive reuse, dematerialisation and standardisation) we create thoughtful, responsible and measurable outcomes for clients, communities and the environment.

  • We collaborate with ESD and sustainability consultants to better understand the impact of our projects and ensure we tread lightly.
  • We consider design efficiencies, embodied energy, and the minimisation of waste and resource use.
  • We help clients identify their sustainability targets and navigate through certification frameworks.
  • We factor in biophilic and design principles such as circularity, end-of-life renewability, design for disassembly, and thoughtful, long-lasting materiality.

The results are buildings deeply embedded into their context and a sense of purposeful stewardship for the clients and communities that inhabit them.

Reconciliation at PMDL

Our primary objective is to foster and nurture active reconciliation throughout our practice.

Reconciliation

We recognise that our responsibility as an ally in this space extends beyond our role as a business and is deeply connected to the influence we hold as an architectural design practice.

We acknowledge the significant influence architecture has on our social fabric, and the role it can play in shaping inclusive, respectful and culturally safe places. We recognise that by engaging with First Nations consultants and communities early in each project, our design outcomes can resonate more deeply with occupants and the wider community, extending beyond the physical form to reflect cultural values, connection to Country, and lived experience.

Through this approach, our design outcomes move beyond words and intention, establishing an architectural vernacular that is deeply connected to place. By listening and being led by community, we can create enduring spaces that feel grounded, respectful and harmonious with the landscapes, stories and histories they belong to.

Community

We give back to the communities in which we live and work. We partner with local and national charitable organisations, with a focus on initiatives that support young people. We actively support the Property Industry Foundation in Australia, which provides safe housing for youth at risk. In Hong Kong, our team supports the Lighthouse Club, a construction industry charity assisting those in need.

Our affiliations reflect our commitment to our social responsibilities.
