Located within the landmark W Hotel at Darling Harbour, IMAX Sydney re-establishes one of Australia's most iconic entertainment destinations with one of the world's largest cinema screens. Integrated within the mixed-use precinct, the venue delivers an immersive cinematic experience through state-of-the-art IMAX with Laser technology, premium acoustics and a purpose-designed auditorium.

PMDL was engaged to develop the operational planning and interior design for the IMAX tenancy, ensuring the technical and experiential requirements of a world-class cinema were seamlessly integrated within the building. The design accommodated a substantial column-free volume of approximately 30 metres by 30 metres, enabling the creation of a stadium-style auditorium with carefully calibrated seating geometry that maximises sightlines and audience immersion.

The auditorium was designed around IMAX's exacting performance standards, incorporating dual laser projection technology, advanced acoustic treatments and an integrated sound system supporting extensive ceiling-mounted speaker arrays. Every element of the space was considered to enhance the cinematic experience, from arrival through to the auditorium itself.

PMDL also delivered the complete interior design for the public areas, including the foyer, ticketing and concession interfaces, auditorium interiors and bespoke carpet design. The result is a contemporary, high-performance entertainment environment that complements the architectural ambition of The Ribbon while creating a memorable visitor experience worthy of one of the world's premier IMAX destinations.
