Located on the banks of Yangcheng Lake, three kilometres north of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, the hotel resort occupies a site adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage–listed city of Suzhou. Renowned for its canals, bridges, water-town architecture, and classical gardens, the context provided a powerful reference point for the design approach. The architecture reinterprets the local vernacular to meet contemporary resort expectations while remaining respectful of its cultural and environmental setting.
Central to the concept is the understanding that, as in Suzhou itself, the spaces between buildings are as significant as the buildings they frame. Traditional Chinese planning principles are translated into a contemporary resort language through a series of courtyards and interconnected outdoor rooms that foster privacy, intimacy, and a sense of nostalgia. These spaces shape a calm, layered environment that balances openness with enclosure.
The masterplan is organised as a collection of village-like precincts that respond to the lake, landscape, and guest experience.
Movement through the resort unfolds as a carefully choreographed sequence — from arrival and lobby to accommodation, dining, and spa — ensuring clarity while maintaining a sense of discovery. Public and private realms are subtly separated, with more active areas such as the foyer, bars, and restaurants clearly distinguished from quieter residential zones.
The main hotel lobby and shared facilities are positioned on the eastern edge of the site, separated by a feature canal that reinforces the transition to private accommodation, VIP villas, and spa areas. This spatial hierarchy creates a resort experience that is immersive, legible, and deeply connected to the cultural landscape of Suzhou.
