The Learning Centre is a responsive and agile facility designed to support Strathcona’s long-term educational vision. With “Learning and Community” central to the College’s values, the building establishes a vibrant heart for the senior campus, strengthening connections between learning, social and outdoor spaces.

Developed in response to a renewed strategic plan, the project addresses the need for a future-focused curriculum supported by a broader range of learning environments. The masterplan identified pressure on existing facilities and the importance of providing diverse, flexible spaces to accommodate different learning styles. The removal of ageing buildings unlocked a constrained site and created opportunities to better connect learning, sport and the arts across the Scott Street campus.

The design is organised around a north–south ‘Learning Street’, which acts as a social and spatial spine linking key facilities.

Integrated with this is the Knowledge Exchange, a pivotal element that connects administration, the canteen, sports fields and the central courtyard. Blurred boundaries between internal and external spaces, combined with layered landscape interventions, create relaxed, informal settings that encourage interaction, enquiry and discourse, while framing distant views to the Yarra Valley ranges.

The three-storey building accommodates a range of learning environments. The ground-floor Knowledge Exchange provides open, adaptable spaces for study, collaboration, presentation and reflection. The first floor supports Middle School learning with independent spaces and breakout areas that foster ownership and responsibility. Science learning occupies the upper level, with purpose-designed laboratories integrating theory and practical learning, central demonstration areas and display elements that promote inquiry-based education and celebrate the sciences.
