Set within the green surroundings of Tai Po, the International College Hong Kong – Hong Lok Yuen kindergarten campus was reimagined to better reflect the school’s emphasis on outdoor learning, wellbeing, and child-led exploration. The renovation delivers a series of contemporary, adaptable learning environments that support both individual development and a strong sense of community.
The project comprised the refurbishment of five classrooms across two floors, alongside targeted upgrades to the building envelope and the addition of a new external terrace. Working within the constraints of the existing structure, the design prioritised spatial flexibility, clarity, and efficient use of space. Operable partitions and custom-designed joinery allow classrooms to be easily reconfigured, supporting a range of activities from active, collaborative learning to quieter, focused study.
Each classroom is organised into distinct zones to accommodate different modes of learning, balancing open areas with more intimate corners. Furniture and storage are designed to be lightweight, accessible, and adaptable, enabling teachers and students to shape their environment throughout the day.
A strong connection to nature underpins the design approach. New and enhanced openings improve natural light and visual links to the surrounding landscape, while the addition of the terrace extends learning beyond the classroom. A soft, natural material palette — paired with subtle accent colours — creates a calm and engaging environment, while acoustic ceiling treatments and integrated lighting contribute to overall comfort and performance.
The result is a cohesive and flexible learning environment that supports the school’s vision for a happy, healthy, and dynamic kindergarten community.
